GUANGZHOU :A young and happy go lucky Malaysian youth with large tumour on his facetoday bid farewell with his 'odd looking face' when he take up a life-time chance to undergo a surgery to remove the tumour in a special operation held at Fuda Cancer Hospital here.(8th June).

Tan Kia Khim, 25,a coffee shop assistant, from Kampung Berjaya, Alor Star hadcarried the tumour for the passed twenty five year, after he fell off from a bed when he was a few month old.

He had the chance of a facelift thanks to Kedah Chinese Assembly Hall (KCAH) where a committee was set-up to start a fundraising campaign to collect fund for him and a girl Hong Siew Hui,18, who also have a giant tumour on her face, to go for a preliminary checks and initial surgery at the mentioned hospital.

Kia Khim leftAlor Star on April 15th since then, he had gone through a few preliminary medical check-ups including procedures like haematological and vascular interventional exainations, chest radiographs, X-rays, MRI, CT scans, biopsies and other checkups at the hospital.

At9.00am on Thursday (8th June) Kia Khim was wheeled into the operation theatre situated at the six floor of the hospital for operation.

A group of specialists leading by associate professor Niu Li-Zhi and professor Liu Da-Lie assisted by others specialists and hospital staff minotored by Professor Xu Ke-Cheng performing the face reconstruction surgery on Kia Khim’s face.

"I am90% confident that the operation will be a success," said Kia Khim at his room, a night before the operation day (7th June)

Tan's father Tan Seong Meng 50, who flew in from Alor Star on 5th June to support his son when met said he had some discussion and signed some of the operation documents with the leading doctors of the operation and Kia Khim seem worried on seeing that and he told him it is a normal procedure and do not worry.

“”I am confident the operations will go on well and by 12.00 noon, I will know the outcome of the operation," he said.

At 12.00pm,news spreading thatKia Khim’s surgery was very-very successful and will be wheeled out from the operation theatre.

Kia Khim’s father Seong Meng was already waiting outside the operation theatre.

At 1.00pm he was wheeled out from the operation theatre and transfered to Intensive Care Unit(ICU) situated at the fifth floor of the hospital. Almost all his face was covered with bandages.

He is unconscious due to the injection during the surgery.

“I am very happy that my son’s operation success. I haven’t inform my wife after Kia Khim entered the operation room as I don’t want her to start crying ,” he said

He thanks Fuda Cancer Hospital for performing the excellent surgery on his son’s face. He also do not forget to thanks everybody In Malaysia and China especially printed media and electronic media for the helping hands and news coverage to enable his son to have a new life.

“It will be a birthday present for my son’s coming 26th birthday which will be celebrate on 13th June. It is also a father’s day present for me too,” he said.

““I hope Siew Hui’s operation will be success as without her, my son wouldn’t be in Guangzhou,” he added.

Three important persons from Fuda Cancer Hospital(FCH) including it’s president ProfessorXu Ke-Cheng , vice-president FCH Associate Proffesor Niu Li-Zhiand Professor Liu Da-Lie andother assistant doctors and staff called for a press conference to announce that Kia Khim’s surgery was very successful and answering question from local and Malaysian media.

Professor Xu Ke-Cheng said,”The operation ended in two hour time earlier thanwhat we expected,”

“The whole operation go through very very well with some minor bleeding of 1500ml of blood which is controllable and without much complication as we are well prepared for every obstacles,” he said.

“”Plastic reconstructive surgery also been carry out to rectify and reduce the saiz of Kia Khim’smouth, lip, eye and nose to make him look better,”

“The success of the operation is the combination of the high technology used by the hospital beside the world class procedures applied on the surgery.”

Associate ProfessorNiu Li-Zhi said"Our hospital had a lot of experience dealing with various kind of tumours as in China there are many such kind of patients,”

“We take-up challenges. Our determination to do what other people cannot do lead us to success,” he said.

Professor Xu Ke-cheng , president of Fuda Cancer Hospital said Fuda Cancer Hospital had more than 2500 cases of on the bed experience treating various kind of tumours using the "cryoablation procedure, one of the best procedure in this region.

To a question the possibility of the re-grow of the tumour, Professor Liu Da-Lie, a plastic reconstructive surgery specialist said the possible of re-grow of the tumour is there but very-very slow and take years.”

Professor Xu Ke-Cheng said,”It probably will take another 15 years for Kia Khim to return to the hospitalto have the re-grow tumour remove again.”

“We managed to remove the tumour saized of 20 X 20 X 7 centimetres and weight about one kilogrammewith some controllable bleeding.”
