The Indonesia Cryosurgery Centre, a joint-venture project between Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital and Gading Pluit (Hospital of Jakarta, was officially open on 12th March 2008. The opening ceremony was graced by Dr. Franco of Italy, president of the International Cryosurgery Society, Professor Xu Kecheng, president of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, his deputy Dr. Zuo Jian sheng and fellow doctor, Dr. Niu Lizhi, Professor Akadul, Chairman of the Indonesia Cancer Society, Professor from Sweden, and last but not least, Dr. Tay , President of Gading Pluit Hospital.
On 13th March, upon request, Dr. Niu performed a demonstrative cryosurgery operation on a lung cancer patient followed by another operation on a nasal cancer patient by Dr. Zuo Jiansheng and Dr. Liu Zheng Ping using photodynamic therapy. About 200 oncologists and related clinical specialists observed the operations through cabled television. The demonstrative operations were highly successful. Throughout the operation, the patients remained composed and showed no sign of pain. The news received wide coverage by the local media.
During the Third National Cancer Symposium held from 5th – 7th March 2008 at the Borobudor Hotel in Jakarta, Professor Xu delivered three papers on these topics: “Cryosurgery for Lung Cancer”, “Cryosurgery for Breast Cancer” and “Cryosurgery for Cancer of Head and Neck”. More than 300 participants listened to Professor Xu’s deliberation with great enthusiasm and participated actively in the discussion on the strengths and weaknesses of cryosurgery, its development and future prospects. The symposium was organized by the Dharmais Hospital of Indonesia, which is the National Cancer Treatment Centre of Indonesia.
The Contemporary Diagnosis and Treatments of Cancer Conference were held in the GadingPluitHospital, Jakarta from 13th-15th March, 2008. More than 200 medical specialists and practitioners attended the conference. During the conference, medical professionals from Italy, Sweden, China and several universities from Indonesia delivered their academic reports and findings which captivated the audience. Among them, Dr. Franco made a report on “The Status Quo of Cryosurgery for Cancer in the World Today”, whereas Professor Xu talked on “Cryosurgery for Liver Cancer” and “Gene Therapy for Cancer” and Dr. Niu reported on ”Cryosurgery for Lung Cancer”. Dr. Niu also demonstrated on the spot cryosurgery treatment of progressive lung cancer using the ‘argon-helium knife’.
