UMMC: We can remove tumours from Kedah duo

PETALING JAYA: Surgeons from the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) said they are able to remove the tumours on the faces of two young people in Kedah who are seeking treatment for their deformity.

If they agree to the local treatment, 18-year-old Hong Siew Hui and Tan Kia Khim, 25, need not go for surgery abroad as suggested by the Kedah Chinese Assembly Hall (KCAH), which has started a fund-raising campaign for the two.

The group, with the backing of six Chinese newspapers, hopes to collect RM200,000 from donors to send the two for preliminary checks at the Fuda Hospital in Guangdong, China.

If doctors at the hospital confirm that removal of the tumours by surgery was possible, they would raise more money for the operation.

A Universiti Malaya medical team here, led by maxillofacial surgeon Prof Dr Zainal Arif from its Dentistry Faculty, said they could operate on the two young people at a reduced cost.

Faculty dean Prof Dr Rahimah Abdul Kadir said that for a start, the team would carry out a preliminary examination on the two at the UMMC.

Asked his views about the new development on the two cases, KCAH secretary Cheng Lai Hock expressed his gratitude to the university team.

“If the two opt for surgery at the UMMC, any excess from their fund would be put to use for other good purposes,” he said.
